How CBD Can Be Beneficial for Your Pets | Separation Anxiety

Calling all dog lovers! This post is for you. Over the course of the past year and a half, you’ve probably had quite a bit of one-on-one time with your furry friend(s). Working remotely has brought us all back to our living rooms, dining rooms, at-home offices, etc. If you have a pet, you probably find them in the same room as you. During this pandemic period, our pets have been in total doggy heaven – licking and loving up every second of their hooomans being home more than away. Luckily for us humans, we reap the benefits of a happy, joyful pet! But as the world begins to press “start” again, we may be facing the reality that duty calls, returning to work and school again. What will our furry friends do without us once again?

Back to School, Back to Work

Most of us have spent an unusual amount of time at home, while our pets have spent time learning and adjusting to our new schedules with us at home. When we start trickling out the door for work or school and not returning for hours, our pets get suspicious. Uncomfortable. Worried. Anxious. And yes, stressed! Unfortunately, our pets aren’t immune to stress or separation anxiety. As a result, they can become quite destructive.

Dog Separation Anxiety

An abrupt change in schedule that affects when or how long a dog is left alone can trigger the development of separation anxiety. Although we can’t protect them from every stressful experience, we can help alleviate stress when it happens. If your dog is barking when you leave, urinating in the house, scratching, and digging at doors, they might be suffering from Separation Anxiety. Just like people, dogs can suffer from detachment and loneliness from their owners, especially after we’ve spent so much time with them.

What do we do as humans when we are faced with anxiety-ridden situations? Many of us have looked to CBD to help combat these high-stress experiences. Did you know you and your dog have something in common? Aside from the obvious love you share for each other and separation anxiety, you both have an Endocannabinoid System.

In humans and dogs alike, the ECS affects our brain, skin, heart, eyes, stomach – and even mood. Our Endocannabinoid Systems affect our entire bodies. As we all know, CBD works by interacting with the body’s Endocannabinoid System, which is responsible for maintaining homeostasis, or balance, in the body. So what does this mean? Is it possible for dogs to also reap the same benefits from adding CBD to their diets?

CBD for Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Yes! It is possible. Put away the Trazodone and reach for the CBD instead. Many pet owners will turn to pharmaceuticals like Trazadone to help combat their pet’s anxious behaviors. Unfortunately, these often come with unnecessary side effects.

According to CBD Dog Health,

CBD is beneficial in a behavior anxiety situation. The endocannabinoid system is a regulator; it puts everything in balance where it should be.

Alternative Tips for Separation Anxiety

Aside from adding CBD to your dog’s daily routine, there are a couple of other tips we have found that can help combat Separation Anxiety with your pets.

  • Slowly start leaving your home for periods of time so that your pet will get used to you leaving. Pay attention to how they react when you leave and return to determine if they show anxiety-related symptoms.
  • Play soft, relaxing music while you are away from home.
  • Before leaving for the day, tire them out with a walk or playtime.
  • Leave some of your clothes or blankets around so that your pet can detect your scent.

If in doubt, talk to a veterinarian. It is always a good idea to consult with your vet about your pet’s behavior if it starts interfering with their happiness.
